German company SMA Solar Technology has opened its first operation in the UK, settling in new offices in the Linford Wood Business Centre.
For over 30 years, SMA has been the worldwide market and technology leader for solar inverters – the most important component of every photovoltaic (PV) solar power system. The group employs more than 6,500 people in 19 countries on four continents.
A solar inverter is the most important element in every solar power system and the electronic device converts direct current produced by the solar modules into grid compliant alternating current. SMA Solar Technology is the only supplier that has a product range with suitable inverters for any module type and any power class.
Henry Dziuba, managing director of SMA UK: “The UK government has a big carbon reduction and renewable energy target to meet by 2020 and the introduction of the feed-in tariff (Fit) in 2010 to incentivise business and home owners to produce their own energy as part of this scheme has been a great success.
“The benefits of producing your own renewable, ‘green’ energy have always been clear, both environmentally and socially but now it’s also financially very attractive. For this reason, we are convinced that the prospects for PV are extremely promising here in the UK.”
The Milton Keynes site will handle all UK sales, service and marketing and has already created 12 new jobs and aims to recruit another eight by Christmas.
The new premises, 5,700 square feet of ground and first floor offices in the Gemini building, was leased to SMA through commercial property specialist Douglas Duff.
SMA joins a cluster of solar companies in Milton Keynes but the main attraction is the city’s central location. “Not only can you reach 60 per cent of the population within 90 minutes, but with excellent access to motorways and airports MK was an easy choice,” says Dziuba.
